There Was Only Ever One Way
(2021-Present)
There Was Only Ever One Way Out began as a collection, a way to savor the experiences of my solo travels, an attempt at a living journal of sorts. However, like other subjects I’ve focused on, there is a return to loss and even to grieving. In 2024, my oldest son received his driver’s permit, a true coming of age. As a father and a lover of the road, it has been revelatory to see that many of the coming-of-age generation beginning to drive don't have the same sense of auto adventure and the independence that I and many of my previous generations experienced when they started driving. I see the work as both nostalgia and inspiration, but also as an era's funeral and a curiosity of what wild oats this generation has to sow in our wake. Anchored in three-color photographs, There Was Only Ever One Way Out looks to be the campfire story that evokes conversation between generations and inspires more people to find their way out.
